« Friday Five :: January 30th, 2004

You have just won one million dollars:

1. Who do you call first?

My husband, Josh

2. What is the first thing you buy for yourself?

A meal at McDonald’s - because I could get anything I wanted without having to check in my purse first to see if I had enough money

3. What is the first thing you buy for someone else?

A sign that says “F@#! You!” for Josh to give to his boss

4. Do you give any away? If yes, to whom?
I would definitely give some to my family members. And some to charity - particularly the RSPCA, Leukaemia Foundation and Heart Foundation

5. Do you invest any? If so, how?

I would invest the majority of it. How??? How the hell would I know how to invest a million bucks?!?

I sure hope that it’s $US1,000,000, because that would mean $AU1,316,200.80.

« Library Books :: January 29th, 2004

It pisses me off when people treat library books badly, by folding over pages, scribbling in them, spilling things on them, and such. Accidents do happen, but by and large, people just don’t care because the book is not theirs.

One of the books I loaned today has been treated very badly, but you wouldn’t know to look at it. The pages are clean, unfolded and untorn.

But it REEKS of cigarette smoke.

YUCK.

Again, something I didn’t write, but at least this time I know who did - William Lyon Phelps. I agree with him wholeheartedly.

« Domestic Engineering :: January 28th, 2004

I’m a bloody good housewife. The house is always clean, we never run out of toilet paper, my husband always has clean socks and undies, and most days I make both his lunch AND dinner.

Since FlyLady, I’ve gotten into a really good routine, and housework seems to take half the time it used to, even less. Every day I do laundry, prepare meals, wash dishes, clean, put garbage out, get rid of things we don’t use or need, work in the yard, tend to the animals and more, yet if I added it all up, I doubt I spend more than 2 - 3 hours a day on these chores.

It doesn’t seem like enough. My poor husband goes out to work nearly every day, working a crappy job that he hates, getting abused and pissed off, to earn money for us to live on. I potter around the house for a couple of hours and have the rest of the time to myself. Sure, I sell Nutrimetics and do mystery shopping assignments, but they’re definitely not as stressful or time-consuming as my husband’s job. It just doesn’t seem fair.

I know that when we have children, it will be different. Being a parent is a rewarding yet extremely challenging experience, and it’s a massive responsibility to raise a family. But until then, what do I do? Right now, I don’t feel like I am making any worthwhile contribution to the world in any way, shape or form.

The delightful Josh over at eSinner.com has installed a hit counter for me. Yay!

For those of you who don’t know, Josh is my husband. He’s a damn good one, too :o )

« Obsessive Consumption :: January 25th, 2004

A good way to help you save money is to write down all the purchases you make in a week, so you can see what you’re spending your money on, what purchases are unnecessary, and where you can cut back. Being on a tight budget, I’m pretty aware of what I spend my money on, but even so I’m sure there are some purchases that I make and then completely forget about it.

Not so Kate @ Obsessive Consumption. She takes pictures of all her purchases and documents them in a study of personal consumption. It’s actually fascinating stuff. I’m currently working through the archives, looking at her purchases from the past year. She really does make a note of everything - not just what she bought and the price, but the date, time and place she got it, and more.

And by everything, I mean EVERYTHING - I even know what brand of tampon this girl uses. Kate seems to eat out a lot (and not very healthily), and drinks coffee frequently.

But what I really want to know is - as a grad student, where does she get the money for all this stuff?
