Tonight was the final ever episode of Burke’s Backyard, and I’m not ashamed to admit I got a bit teary. It’s been going since I was 11 years old and was one of those shows we always watched together as a family, like Hey Hey It’s Saturday. It’s always sad to say goodbye to parts of your childhood.

My grandfather Fred was in the war. He hated it. He went AWOL a couple of times but got caught.
Then he got his ticket out. He got shot. His wounds were experimentally treated under primitive conditions. He survived, but bore the scars - physical and mental.
So horrific were the things he saw that he only began to talk about them in 2000, which ended up being the same year he died.
I sat and listened as my grandfather spoke of what he saw. Of blood and fallen friends. Of bodies without limbs and limbs without bodies.
And I held his hand as he cried.

Growing up, my father had to leave for work early, usually just as I was getting up in the morning.
When I was about 7 or 8, I used to lie in bed pretending to be asleep and wait for him to come in and say goodbye.
He would creep in, knowing full well I was awake, and say “And the handsome prince kissed the sleeping beauty”, giving me a kiss.
And I would “miraculously” wake up and give him a hug.

Last night Josh had a dream that I decided to have gender reassignment surgery and he tried to talk me out of it but I wouldn’t change my mind.
